Released on 23 October 2015 as the lead single from her third studio album, 25, ‘Hello’ brings more than just music to our ears. Hello is an epic piano ballad that has successfully defined a new sound of soul – the Adele sound. Adele does justice to her new sound by creatively magnifying human vulnerability in a definitive, simple and soulful tone.
The song starts with the singer engaging in a somber, nostalgic apology for breaking a lover’s heart. She sings: “Hello, it’s me/I was wondering if after all these years you’d like to meet/To go over everything/They say that time’s supposed to heal ya/But I ain’t done much healing/Hello, can you hear me/I’m in California dreaming about who we used to be/When we were younger and free/I’ve forgotten how it felt before the world fell at our feet.” These words roll into fine pearls and brighten up in a melodramatic tone that choruses in tearful regret.
Accompanied by a record-breaking video shot in sepia and directed by Xavier Dolan, released on 22 October 2015, the singer relates time past with a never-ending present. This alone is a message that the realities of life are transitory and the poetry of human existence is written on different pages. Adele reminds us that apologizing for lost loves doesn’t stop the hands of time, and we have little or no control over life itself.
Written by Adele and her producer Gregory Kurstin, ‘Hello’ is overly instinctive and covertly seductive, as Adele brings a rare sound to the din – reemphasizing a matured sound that was nurtured in her previous album, 21; coloured with a trademark resonance of lush, lilting melody inspiring a hypnotic soundscape that erupts and calms in every verse.
